Diesel just did something regular gas has not: it set an all-time U.S. record.
As of September 4, 2026, AAA’s national average for diesel is $5.85 per gallon — above the previous high of about $5.82 from June 2022 (the Ukraine-war spike). Regular unleaded is expensive too (~$4.15, a Labor Day holiday record above $4), but diesel cleared the absolute historical bar.
Full ranking: Diesel Prices by State Ranked. Companion gas story: Labor Day gas hits a record above $4.
The numbers that matter
- Today: $5.85 national (AAA)
- Prior record: ~$5.82 in June 2022
- Year ago: ~$3.71 (+57%)
- Month ago: ~$5.37
- Pre-Iran (late Feb 2026): ~$3.76 — roughly $2.09 lower than today
CNN’s review of AAA history back to 2000 says diesel is on pace for one of the largest annual jumps on record. Six months into the Iran conflict, middle distillates are still the sticky part of the fuel complex.
Where diesel hurts most by state
Our first diesel state table (AAA, Sep 4) shows a brutal top and a “cheap” floor that is still painful:
- Highest: California (~$7.71), Hawaii (~$7.00), Washington (~$6.81)
- Lowest: Oklahoma (~$5.38), Kansas (~$5.43), South Dakota (~$5.44)
Even the cheapest state diesel average is well above last year’s national price. There is no “back to normal” lane on this map.
Why diesel is the inflation channel people miss
Most households watch regular unleaded. Freight does not. Diesel moves groceries, Amazon boxes, building materials, farm equipment, and long-haul goods. When diesel jumps:
- Truckers and fleets pay first
- Carriers add fuel surcharges
- Retailers and shippers pass costs into prices and fees
- Consumers feel it weeks later on shelves — not at their own pump
That is the second-wave story we flagged when oil first spiked: gasoline is the visible sticker; diesel is how oil shocks leak into broader CPI.
Gas vs diesel this weekend
Labor Day weekend 2026:
- Regular gas: ~$4.15 — first Labor Day ever above $4 (prior holiday high $3.82 in 2012)
- Diesel: $5.85 — first all-time AAA high since the 2022 record
Same conflict. Different records. Both belong on the scoreboard.
